County Committee to meet Feb. 22 to open qualifying for June 1 Primary

The County Committee meets Monday February 22, 2010 at 6pm at the Homewood Library to open
qualifying to run for offices in this year's June 1 Primary.
The Committee will
also set qualifying fees for the various offices at that time.

It's being called the most important election of a lifetime, and that might be understating the case. Alabama is assumed to be a solid "red" state; let's add some blue! Vote for Barack Obama for president, and straight Democratic all the way down the ballot. Note that there are several constitutional amendments. Jefferson County HQ will open this month!

| Enthusiastic Democrats will have to wait only a couple more weeks for the opening of the Jefferson County Headquarters! Our 2008 election center is located in downtown Birmingham, across from the YMCA at the corner of 4th Ave. N. and Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. Look for details and a grand opening celebration soon! And be sure to follow the Democratic National Convention , which begins August 25 in Denver, Colorado.

Executive Committee Meets Thursday July 31 for County Commission vote

This is an important message from County Chair Robert Yarbrough.
The Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee will meet on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Fairfield Civic Center. The meeting will start promptly at 6 p.m. The agenda will adhere to party rules.
At the meeting the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee will nominate the party's nominee for the County Commission District One election. This nomination will be made pursuant to orders of the Alabama Supreme Court and Circuit Judge Scott Vowell.
The meeting is open to the public, however only members of the Executive Committee will participate in the discussion and vote.

Blue Dot Ball is Sept. 18 - Save the Date!

The big event for the year is coming Sept. 18 - the annual Blue Dot Ball. It will be in the same place as last year's, in Homewood in fabulous SOHO. Details and special guests will be announced soon. This is our major fundraiser, with proceeds going to "get out the vote" for our amazing Democratic candidates in the November election.

July Exec Committee meeting postponed

| Because of the July 4 holiday weekend, the meeting regularly scheduled for July 7 is postponed to later in the month. We will post an update as soon as the new date and time is set.

Runoff July 15 for Constable District 57
|
The District 57 Constable race will be the only Jefferson County Democratic runoff, in the election set for July 15. Georgia Gray Hampton received 48.79 percent of the vote; she will be in a runoff with Walter "Big Walt" Wilson, who obtained 26.93 percent. The vote was certified last week.
Democrats who live in District 57 can go to the polls on July 15 to cast their votes in the runoff election.

The primary election for state and local candidates is Tuesday, June 3. Here in Jefferson County we have several races on the ballot, including local and state judgeships. We will choose our nominees to go up against the Republicans in November. It looks like a great year for Democrats, so our nominees have a good shot at election. Be wise, look at all the candidates, and make your choice on June 3. Let's get a good Democratic turnout! Executive Committee meets June 2

The regular meeting of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee is set for Monday, June 2 at 6 p.m. Hospitality begins at 5:30 p.m.We will meet at the Communication Workers of America office, 210 Summit Parkway (off West Oxmoor Rd. in Homewood). Park in the rear; the meeting is in the downstairs conference room.
The Executive Committee will review and approve minutes for the 2008 meetings to date, as well as other items which committee members might add.
All Democrats are invited to attend.

Candidates will meet in May 20 forum

Local Democratic groups are hosting a Candidate Forum on May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Homewood Public Library, 1721 Oxmoor Rd.
Confirmed statewide candidates include Vivian Davis Figures, U.S. Senate and Deborah Bell Paseur, Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice. All statewide and local Democratic candidates as listed in the Birmingham News on Saturday, April 5th have been invited.

Executive Committee meets May 5 - candidates invited

Jefferson County Democrats have their regular monthly meeting on May 5. Hospitality begins at 5:30 and the Executive Committee meeting at 6 p.m. We meet at the Communication Workers of America building, 210 Summit Parkway (off West Oxmoor Rd. in Homewood). Come to the rear of the building - the meeting is int he downstairs conference room.
In addition to regular business, county-wide candidates will have an opportunity to make a brief statement. This will for those who are in the June 3 primary as well as those with no primary opposition but who will face Republicans in November.
Candidates who are not running countywide, like Constables, are invited to attend for the networking opportunities.
Our meetings are the first Monday of each month, and we welcome all Democrats to attend. This is a great year to be a member of the Democratic Party!

Qualifying ends 5 p.m. April 4; meeting and reception to be held

The Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee will meet Friday, April 4, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a casual wine & cheese reception for Jefferson County Democrats.
Qualifying deadline is 5 p.m. April 4. Qualifying forms can be submitted at the meeting.
This month's meeting date was changed to accommodate qualifying. Regular meetings are on the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. They will resume in May.
We will meet at the CWA Office at 210 Summit Blvd. in Homewood. This is off of West Oxmoor Road. Come to the back of the building - our meeting is in the downstairs meeting room.

Qualifying opens for Jefferson County offices

Qualifying is open through 5 p.m. April 4 for the June 3 Democratic primary.
Candidates must file their qualifying documents and fee by the deadline in order to be on the ballot.
These are the county positions and their qualifying fees:
- Jefferson County Tax Assessor $1,476
- Jefferson County Tax Collector $1,476
- Tax Collector, Bessemer Division $1,328
- Tax Assessor, Bessemer Division $1,328
- Jefferson County Treasurer $1,215
- Treasurer, Bessemer Division $1,094
- Constable $ 200
Candidate packets are available at the office of County Chair Robert Yarbrough, 2809 5th Ave. S. in Birmingham, phone (205) 252-9431.
