Bumper Stickers

By KYLE WHITMIRE

Poll numbers may be showing gains for Democrats , but in the South liberals still have a hard time finding one another. Two women in Birmingham, Ala., have started a bumper sticker campaign to give liberals there a way to express frustration, or at least exchange knowing glances, and the tiny signage is spreading to other states.

After the 2004 elections, the women, Joellyn Beckham and Gina McWilliams, created the Bright Blue Dot, which they call a liberal antithesis to the “W the President” stickers seen on many Alabama cars. The bumper stickers are the same size but the women’s features a blue dot on a red field. In lowercase letters, the sticker says, “another bright blue dot in a really red state.”

“If it’s in your face, then people here might take a baseball bat to your windshield,” Ms. Beckham said, “but if it’s subtle, then it’s like a secret society.”

After liberal bloggers spread word to other states, Ms. Beckham and Ms. McWilliams started BriteBlueDot.com . “We’ve had orders from every red state except New Mexico,” Ms. Beckham said. “I don’t know why, but it hasn’t happened there yet.”

Alabama Democrats have adopted the campaign, holding the Blue Dot Ball as a fund-raiser in September.
